Abnormal uterine bleeding is heavy or unusual bleeding coming from the uterus and out the vagina. This bleeding can occur any time during a woman’s monthly cycle including during her period. We here at Synergy Immediate Care can treat you if you believe you may have an issue with abnormal uterine bleeding.

Symptoms

Some symptoms may include:

  • Vaginal bleeding between periods
  • Extreme/heavy bleeding during your period
  • Bleeding for over 7 days

If you are not sure if you have heavy bleeding, here are some examples of what heavy bleeding can be classified as:

  • Bleeding through a tampon (have to change every hour)
  • Bleeding through a pad (have to change every hour)
  • Excessive bleeding above and beyond your normal for over 7 days

Heavy bleeding does not necessarily mean you have something wrong with you. If you have always had heavy bleeding during your period, then this is normal for your body. However, if you do not have a heavy flow and you experience these symptoms, then it is possible that this is a form of menorrhagia.

What are the causes?

A wide variety of things can cause abnormal uterine bleeding. Some cause may be:

  • Pregnancy
  • Polyps
  • Thyroid problem (rare)
  • Infection of the cervix
  • Cancer
  • Menopause

These, are just some possibilities that may be causing your abnormal bleeding. A hormone imbalance is also very common. A hormone imbalance can be caused by menopause, and also can be triggered by a change in birth control (either on or off it) or your body starting to change.

How is Abnormal Uterine Bleeding Diagnosed?

Our physicians will give you an appropriate evaluation and possibly testing depending on your age. Possible interventions vary and can be anything from a pregnancy test to checking your blood count for an iron deficiency. Our experienced physician, Doctor Amr Etman, will know the best test for you that will give the most accurate results. An in-office hysteroscopy exam might be necessary and can be done at the same visit, along with an endometrial biopsy as needed. To maximize the convenience, in many cases you won’t have to schedule another exam or go to a different facility just to have that done. Depending on your test results you will be given some different options on how to treat your abnormal uterine bleeding.

We here at Synergy Immediate Care have a fantastic staff of physicians that will ensure that you are in good hands. For any more questions, or if you have any concerns, please contact us at 703-942-5331.
